The Past Week In Self-Restraint

I scored a ten. Out of a hundred.

I don't give a flying fuck about fashion. I'm a fatty. And in this country, if you're borderline obese, you're lucky enough to leave the mall with non-lola clothes that hug you in the right places. More often than not, I'd enter the fitting room with five articles of clothing and leave empty-handed. Despite that, I never get disappointed. Life goes on, and if that means I don't get to have a new shirt or a pair of jeans that suits my pork-filled proportions perfectly, that's totally fine. But clearly, the time spent scouring racks upon racks of clothes for nothing was time wasted.

Buying books, though, is a different story. A bookstore is a horseshoe magnet and I am a loose staple wire. We're attracted; it can't be helped. The mere exercise of scanning endless rows of books is rewarding enough. Not to mention, therapeutic. So, whether I leave the bookstore with four books or none at all, it's still time well spent. Life goes on, as well the expanse of my imagination. Pure win.

Last week, the inevitable happened. National Bookstore held its annual cut-price sale and I had extra cash in hand. Cash that would have went straight to the bank had I kept my guards up. But, of course, the soul is weak.

The damage:

This binge was brought to you by six branches of NBS and Powerbooks in five different malls, in four consecutive days. Unlike the NBS Warehouse Sale last year, this time, I only checked out the books that I know I will be able to read within a six-month time frame. That means, YOUNG ADULT. Also, minutes of reflecting and sad adieus to those that didn't make the cut.

THE 20% OFF:
Divergent, Veronica Roth
This was sold out in all branches. And then, in Galleria, I found one and grabbed it. It was destiny. SOP reread before March 2014.
The Lover's Dictionary, David Levithan
I've been trying to read this but the e-book format doesn't work for me. After forever, finally, I'll be able to.
Just One Day, Gayle Forman
P100 off is a steal! I will reread this before Just One Year comes out next month! Who's excited?!

THE 70%-80% OFF:
Sweet Little Lies & Sugar and Spice, Lauren Conrad
"Lauren Conrad? Yuuuuuck! Lauren Conrad? Laguna Beach? Yuuuuuuck!" That was my brother's curt reaction when he saw me reading this last weekend. a) I know. b) Funny that he even knows LC and LB. c) I bought the first book at the warehouse sale to give author!LC a chance. d) These were priced at P100 a pop. It was screaming "bargain!" so why wouldn't I pick them? e) I like LC. Shut up.
The Carrie Diaries, Candace Bushnell
Ninety-nine pesos! Because I'd love to spot the changes they made to the series.
Extras, Scott Westerfeld
104 pesos! So far, I have this and the third book (which I got from Books for Less!) from the Uglies series. Ha ha. Books 1 and 2, I shall have you soon.
Second Helpings, Charmed Thirds, Fourth Comings, Megan McCafferty
P175 apiece. A HUGE saving, considering that the price of these three, when combined, is equivalent to one regular-priced Jessica Darling book.
Jamie's Kitchen, Jamie Oliver
I'm creating a fort of my husband's cookbooks in my bookshelf. Is that a sin? I now own three, all bargained at P300. I love thrifting books.

As you can see, these babies warrant adoration, caresses, and tight hugs. I just can't say no to them. Can you? So, yeaaaap, when it comes to buying books, you'll never hear me say sorry.
